Just as Aragorn and Arwen can finally build their long-anticipated home, it is time for the hobbits to leave Gondor and return to theirs.
It is easy to forget that the hobbits - none of whom had gone further than Bree previously - have been in exile for over seven months, living rough for much of that time (which would be hard enough for anyone, but particularly home-comforted halflings). It must have been a sore test.
And now they must go back, and finally break up the Fellowship. The proverb with which the King dismisses them is ironic, coming from a homeless wanderer like him, but true nonetheless.
The tree grows best in the land of its sires.
